Some CGM users experience redness, itching or irritation around adhesive sites. There are many possible reasons for a skin reaction, so a product that works well for one person may not solve another person's problem.
Start by looking at where the reaction appears
Notice whether irritation is under the device adhesive, around an overpatch, at the edge of the site or in an area affected by sweat or friction. That information can be useful when discussing the problem with your care team.
What a barrier underpatch does
An underpatch is worn between skin and device adhesive. Our 2-inch Freedom Underpatch™ uses a solid no-hole barrier design for supported devices. See what a full-barrier underpatch is and compare it with an overpatch in our underpatch vs. overpatch guide.
Do not assume every rash has the same cause
Skin irritation can have different causes, including adhesive sensitivity, moisture, friction or another skin condition. Avoid self-diagnosing the cause from appearance alone.
Practical wear habits
- Apply devices only to skin prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Avoid adding lotions or products that conflict with those instructions.
- Do not continue using an accessory if it clearly worsens your skin.
- Rotate sites as directed for your device.
- Keep track of which adhesive products were used when a reaction occurred.
When to contact your care team
Persistent, worsening, painful or significant skin reactions should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Seek prompt medical care for signs of a serious allergic reaction or infection. This article is educational and is not a diagnosis or treatment plan.
