CGM Underpatch vs Overpatch: What's the Difference?

CGM underpatch vs overpatch guide showing solid skin barrier underpatch and open-center overpatch

CGM underpatches and overpatches are not the same product. Their names describe where they are used: an underpatch is placed beneath a compatible sensor, while an overpatch is applied over or around the sensor area.

Understanding that difference makes it easier to choose the accessory that matches what you are trying to accomplish.

What is a CGM underpatch?

An underpatch is a skin barrier patch positioned between the skin and a compatible CGM sensor. The sensor is applied over the underpatch according to the accessory instructions.

Bands for Diabetics makes underpatch options for a broad range of CGMs and insulin pump sites.

What is a CGM overpatch?

An overpatch is an adhesive overlay applied after the compatible sensor is in place. It adds adhesive coverage around the sensor area and can help reinforce the edges during everyday wear.

Which one provides physical protection?

Neither adhesive approach is identical to a protective guard. If your main concern is bumps or snags, a compatible sensor cover or guard may be worth considering in addition to the appropriate adhesive solution.

Can you use an underpatch and overpatch together?

Some protection setups use both, provided the products are designed to work with the specific device and with one another. The underpatch creates the layer beneath the sensor while the overpatch provides coverage from above.

What about reusable armbands?

A reusable Freedom Band is another category entirely. Instead of being an adhesive patch, it provides reusable physical security around compatible CGM or insulin pump protection systems.
