Swimming, beach days and lake trips can add water, sand, sunscreen, towels and repeated clothing changes to the everyday challenges of wearing a CGM or wearable insulin pump. The goal of added protection is simple: reduce avoidable snags and help support the device adhesive without interfering with normal device use.
Choose protection for the activity
An overpatch adds adhesive coverage around a wearable. An underpatch sits between skin and the device adhesive when that product is designed for the specific application. A guard or cover adds a physical layer around the wearable, while a reusable armband system can add another layer of protection during active situations.
Different users prefer different combinations. Always follow the device manufacturer's instructions for wear, water exposure and placement.
Before getting in the water
Apply adhesive products to clean, dry skin according to their instructions and give the adhesive appropriate time to establish before swimming. Avoid placing lotions, oils or sunscreen underneath adhesive areas. Check that patch edges are smooth and that any reusable band is comfortably secure rather than excessively tight.
After swimming
Pat the area dry instead of aggressively rubbing it with a towel. Check patch edges and the surrounding skin. Replace accessories when needed and discontinue use if irritation develops.
