Insulin Pump Tubing Snags: Using a Secondary Tubing Anchor & Protecting the Infusion Site

A tubed pump can be working exactly as intended and still have one very ordinary problem: the tubing gets caught. Door handles, clothing, bedding, bags and quick movements can all transfer force toward the infusion site.

A secondary tubing anchor creates another point between the pump and the infusion site so every small tug does not have a straight path to the site.

Always follow your pump and infusion-set manufacturer’s instructions. Check tubing and the infusion site as directed, and address suspected dislodgement, kinks, leaks or delivery problems according to your medical-device instructions.

What is a secondary tubing anchor?

A secondary anchor is a small adhesive point that holds a section of tubing to the skin away from the infusion site. Freedom Fix-It Dotsβ„’ can be used for this purpose.

Leave relaxed tubing between the site and anchor

The tubing between the infusion site and the anchor should not be stretched tight. Leaving comfortable slack gives normal body movement room before tension reaches the site. Think of it as strain relief, not as pulling the tubing into a fixed straight line.

Add site protection separately

A tubing anchor does not replace an infusion-site overpatch or guard. These accessories address different parts of the problem:

  • Fix-It Dot: secondary tubing anchor.
  • Overpatch: reinforces the adhesive area around a compatible site.
  • Underpatch: sits beneath the device adhesive when a compatible barrier option is desired.
  • Freedom Cannula Guard: adds reusable physical protection around compatible infusion-set styles.

See our Freedom Cannula Guard guide for a step-by-step explanation of how those layers relate.

Common snag situations

Pay particular attention when changing clothes, getting out of a vehicle, moving bags across the body, sleeping, exercising or working around handles and equipment. The pattern is often predictable once you notice where the tubing gets caught.
