Infusion sites have a different set of everyday challenges than CGM sensors. Clothing can catch tubing, movement can tug on the site, and an adhesive edge that begins lifting can become a bigger problem when the tubing is pulled. The Freedom Cannula Guard™ was created as a reusable protection option for compatible infusion-site styles while keeping the surrounding adhesive system modular.
This article is general accessory information. Follow your pump and infusion-set manufacturer’s instructions for site placement, insertion, wear time, tubing and medical care.
What does a cannula guard do?
A cannula guard adds a reusable physical layer around a compatible infusion site. The goal is to help shield the site from common bumps and snags while leaving the medical device itself accessible according to its instructions.
Start with the Freedom Cannula Guard collection and confirm that the guard is listed for your specific infusion-set style before ordering. Infusion sets are not all the same shape, so fit matters.
Build the protection system in layers
One advantage of a modular setup is that you can choose only the layers you need:
- Skin barrier underneath: A compatible infusion-site underpatch can create a barrier between skin and the device adhesive when appropriate for your routine.
- Reusable guard: The Freedom Cannula Guard adds the reusable protective component around a compatible site.
- Overpatch: A compatible infusion-site overpatch can help reinforce the surrounding adhesive and hold the guard system in position.
- Tubing anchor: Freedom Fix-It Dots™ can be used as a secondary tubing anchor so a tug on clothing or bedding is less likely to transfer directly to the infusion site.
Why a secondary tubing anchor can help
If you wear a tubed pump, leave comfortable slack between the infusion site and the secondary anchor. The goal is strain relief—not pulling the tubing tight. A small amount of relaxed tubing gives everyday motion somewhere to go before force reaches the site.
Guard vs. patch: do you need both?
They solve different problems. A reusable guard adds physical protection around the site. An adhesive overpatch reinforces the adhesive area. Some people use one; others prefer both. Your clothing, activity level, site location and how easily adhesive edges lift can all affect the setup that works best.

Choose fit first
Before choosing a color or patch style, confirm compatibility with the exact infusion set you wear. A guard should never be forced onto a site it was not designed to fit. Freedom Band continues to expand compatible infusion-site options as new sets and wear systems become available.
