CGM sensors are designed for multi-day wear, but sweat, water, clothing, repeated movement and everyday bumps can challenge the adhesive before a sensor session is finished. The good news is that a few preparation and protection habits can make a big difference.
Start with clean, completely dry skin
Follow your CGM manufacturer's insertion instructions first. In general, lotions, oils and moisture can interfere with adhesive contact, so prepare the approved insertion area as directed and allow it to dry completely before applying the sensor.
Give the adhesive time to establish a bond
Fresh adhesive benefits from a clean start. Avoid unnecessary soaking or heavy sweating immediately after application when your device and patch instructions recommend a setting period. Always follow the device manufacturer's instructions when they differ.
Watch the edges
Adhesive failure often begins with an edge that catches on clothing, a towel or bedding. A properly fitted CGM overpatch can provide additional adhesive coverage around the sensor. For people who want another physical layer between the sensor and everyday bumps or snags, a compatible guard or reusable band system may be useful.
Sweat, workouts and active days
Running, sports, yard work and hot weather combine moisture with repeated movement. Make sure the sensor and any accessory are compatible with your specific device and wear location. Do not cover openings or interfere with the sensor's intended operation.
What about swimming and showers?
Water resistance varies by device, so check the manufacturer's current instructions before swimming or submerging a sensor. After getting wet, follow the manufacturer's drying guidance and avoid aggressively rubbing the adhesive edges with a towel.
Choose protection based on the problem
If your main problem is lifting adhesive, start by considering an overpatch. If snagging or impacts are the bigger issue, explore Dexcom G7, G7 15 Day and Stelo protection or FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus protection designed around the device you actually wear. Freedom Bands for Diabetics offers bands, guards, covers, overpatches and underpatches so protection can be matched to real-life activity rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Accessories do not replace your CGM manufacturer's instructions. If a sensor becomes dislodged, fails, or causes significant skin irritation, follow the manufacturer's guidance and contact your healthcare professional when appropriate.
