Swimming With a CGM: How to Protect Your Sensor & Adhesive

Swimming, beach days and frequent showers add a different challenge to CGM wear: water combines with movement, towels, sunscreen, sand and clothing changes. Your CGM manufacturer's water-resistance instructions should always come first, but you can also reduce avoidable stress on the sensor and its adhesive.

Check your device's water instructions

Waterproof and water-resistant ratings are device-specific. Verify the current instructions for your exact CGM before swimming or submerging it. Do not assume that instructions for one sensor apply to another model.

Protect the adhesive before it starts lifting

A compatible CGM overpatch adds adhesive coverage around the original sensor patch. Apply accessories according to their instructions and make sure skin is clean and completely dry. Avoid lotions or oils in the application area unless your device manufacturer specifically directs otherwise.

Reduce snags at the pool and beach

Towels, swimsuits, life jackets and beach gear can catch a sensor. A compatible protective guard or reusable band can add a physical barrier for users who are more concerned about bumps and snags than adhesive alone.

After swimming

Follow your manufacturer's guidance for drying the sensor area. Patting rather than aggressively rubbing can help avoid catching an adhesive edge. If an edge is already lifting, follow the device manufacturer's recommendations for securing or replacing the sensor.
