How to Keep a CGM Patch From Peeling: Sweat, Heat & Everyday Wear

CGM patch adhesion guide for helping prevent peeling from sweat, heat and everyday wear

Heat, sweat, friction and repeated movement can be hard on CGM adhesive. When an edge begins to lift, clothing and towels can catch it and make the problem worse. A few simple habits can help reduce those everyday failure points.

Start with clean, dry skin

Before applying a sensor or compatible adhesive accessory, follow the device manufacturer's skin-preparation instructions. Oils, lotions and moisture can work against adhesive. Allow the area to dry completely before application.

Understand underpatches and overpatches

An underpatch is designed to sit beneath the device adhesive, while an overpatch adds coverage around or over the adhesive area depending on its design. They solve different problems, so use a product made for your device and intended application. See our underpatch vs overpatch guide for a detailed comparison.

Reduce edge friction

Shirt sleeves, towels, backpack straps and repeated arm movement can catch exposed adhesive edges. A properly fitted patch, guard, cover or reusable band can help add protection where snagging is common.

Match protection to your CGM

Browse Dexcom G7, G7 15 Day & Stelo accessories or FreeStyle Libre 3 & Libre 3 Plus accessories. Freedom Bands also makes underpatches for CGMs, insulin pumps and compatible infusion/cannula sites.

Accessories should never replace the device manufacturer's instructions. If you develop persistent skin irritation or have concerns about a device site, contact the appropriate healthcare professional or device manufacturer.
